He Waka Atawhai Tukua Wānanga 

Join us at He Waka Atawhai Tukua Wānanga  Wednesday 29th November Mataatua Whare, Whakatane 9am to 3.30pm In partnership with Ngāti Awa, we have a great Wānanga planned with guest speakers Professor Linda Tuhiwai Smith and Te Kuru White. Our aim is to come together as a network to critically reflect on how family violence impacts health, hauora and wellbeing. We will look to share skillsets and information to support safe, relational responses to whānau and in our research understanding of complex systems, look to translate knowledge across diverse systems boundaries. This is an event the team at Atawhai and Ngāti Awa are hosting so please do register here . Any pātai or queries you may have please email Lisa from the Atawhai rōpū.

Atawhai met with the Minister for the Prevention of Family Violence and Sexual Violence

Atawhai met with the Minister for the Prevention of Family Violence and Sexual Violence, Marama Davidson on the 1st of August 2023 to provide an update on research findings and future directions. Minister Davidson provided Atawhai with a letter of support, acknowledging the strong alignment of our research with Te Aorerekura, the National Strategy to Eliminate Family Violence and Sexual Violence. This built upon previous meetings with Minister Davidson on the 6th of April online and her attendance at Atawhai Workshop Six on 16 June 2023.

Conference for General Practice GP2023

In July, the Atawhai rōpū attended the 2023 Conference for General Practice in Auckland. We hosted a workshop that engaged delegates in critical reflection of how system structures shaped responsiveness to family violence and the challenges and strengths encountered in practice. Approximately 50 people attended the workshop and engaged with Atawhai resources and kōrero. Atawhai has now presented at three consecutive annual General Practice conferences, in Wellington (2021), Christchurch (2022) and Auckland (2023).

Hei Atawhai – the Atawhai Network

Atawhai is a distinctive primary care network that connects people to people, knowledge, and tools, translates knowledge across settings, and advocates for change in policy and practice. Since the beginning of this research, the Atawhai Network has grown to include approximately 200 health and social professionals, organisations, academics and whānau. We have identified over 1000 relationships amongst the members of our network.

Future Directions

Atawhai as a Charitable Trust 

“In June 2023 during Atawhai Workshop Ten, participants agreed to establish Atawhai as a Charitable Trust with an executive board. As a legal entity, Atawhai will be able to seek external funding to support the Network and ongoing activities.”
