In September, Dr Claire Gear, Hazel Hape and Matua Hori Ahomiro presented Atawhai at the AUT Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences Research Roadshow in Auckland. Atawhai was acknowledged for our reflections on “community, connection, and engagement
Atawhai met with the Minister for the Prevention of Family Violence and Sexual Violence, Marama Davidson on the 1st of August 2023 to provide an update on research findings and future directions. Minister Davidson provided Atawhai with a letter of support, acknowledging the strong alignment of our research with Te Aorerekura, the National Strategy to Eliminate Family Violence and Sexual Violence. This built upon previous meetings with Minister Davidson on the 6th of April online and her attendance at Atawhai Workshop Six on 16 June 2023.
In July, the Atawhai rōpū attended the 2023 Conference for General Practice in Auckland. We hosted a workshop that engaged delegates in critical reflection of how system structures shaped responsiveness to family violence and the challenges and strengths encountered in practice. Approximately 50 people attended the workshop and engaged with Atawhai resources and kōrero. Atawhai has now presented at three consecutive annual General Practice conferences, in Wellington (2021), Christchurch (2022) and Auckland (2023).
Atawhai is a distinctive primary care network that connects people to people, knowledge, and tools, translates knowledge across settings, and advocates for change in policy and practice. Since the beginning of this research, the Atawhai Network has grown to include approximately 200 health and social professionals, organisations, academics and whānau. We have identified over 1000 relationships amongst the members of our network.
AUT-led research is making it easier for healthcare workers to respond to family violence, by connecting. Read the article
Atawhai as a Charitable Trust
“In June 2023 during Atawhai Workshop Ten, participants agreed to establish Atawhai as a Charitable Trust with an executive board. As a legal entity, Atawhai will be able to seek external funding to support the Network and ongoing activities.”
As our research funding comes to a close, we are focused on sharing our findings across communities, academic and health care forums, publications and other media. Email our team kiaora@atawhaitia.co.nz for any enquries and GEM card resources
